Answer guide

What is auditable AI — and why does public-sector AI need it?

Short answer: auditable AI is AI whose inputs, logic, and outputs can be inspected, explained, and checked after the fact — so a resident, auditor, or commissioner can see why the system did what it did, and who signed off. Government and nonprofit decisions have to be accountable and contestable, and “trust us, the model said so” fails that test.

Auditable vs. explainable vs. “responsible”

“Responsible AI” is the umbrella. Explainable means you can understand a given output. Auditable goes further: the whole decision — inputs, model version, logic, and human sign-off — is recorded and reconstructable later. In public work, auditable is the one that survives a records request. [Draft: add an example from your own work.]

What makes a system auditable

  • Provenance — you know where the data came from and how it moved.
  • Logging — inputs, outputs, model and version captured for every run.
  • Human sign-off — consequential decisions carry a named reviewer.
  • Versioning — you can say which system produced a result, and when.

Why it matters in government

A resident can challenge a decision. An auditor can ask for the basis. A commissioner has to answer for it in a public meeting. Auditable AI makes all three possible — and it is the bar every project clears across our work. [Draft: tie to a specific district or ecosystem example.]

Key takeaways

  • Explainable answers “why this output;” auditable answers “reconstruct the whole decision.”
  • Provenance + logging + human sign-off + versioning is the practical minimum.
  • In the public sector, auditability is what earns and keeps trust.
